Intelligent pharmaceutical equipment – ​​a powerful tool for pharmaceutical companies to enhance their core competitiveness

In the field of pharmaceutical equipment, discussions and applications of intelligent concepts are deepening, as it not only represents the development level of advanced pharmaceutical equipment but also represents a common goal for pharmaceutical equipment companies worldwide. As market competition intensifies, intelligent pharmaceutical equipment has become not only a competitive advantage for equipment manufacturers but also a powerful "weapon" for pharmaceutical companies to enhance their core competitiveness.


In the current pharmaceutical industry, some pharmaceutical equipment companies are actively preparing for the exploration and realization of intelligent pharmaceutical production and the application of intelligent pharmaceutical equipment through various means. According to industry statistics, there are four main approaches: First, improving, expanding, and perfecting existing pharmaceutical equipment, automated control systems, and information management systems. Second, some pharmaceutical equipment companies are enhancing the automation, networking, and intelligence levels of existing pharmaceutical equipment products, as well as their bottom-up vertical integration capabilities, through mergers, integrations, and business expansion. Third, developing medical-grade intelligent supporting equipment, such as AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles). Fourth, exploring and establishing demonstration models and patterns for intelligent manufacturing in the pharmaceutical equipment industry through national pilot demonstration projects or new factory and workshop projects.

From the current level and status of automation and informatization in my country's pharmaceutical industry, industry analysts believe that based on the research and development and production of intelligent pharmaceutical equipment, my country still has a process of exploration, progression, and continuous improvement. Different pharmaceutical equipment and different drug production processes will also present different intelligent content and forms.

Take intelligent equipment for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) manufacturing as an example. With the increasing demand for TCM, traditional TCM production methods can no longer meet people's requirements. Furthermore, competition among traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) companies is intensifying. Many companies are choosing to change their TCM production models, and intelligent pharmaceutical equipment has become a crucial tool for achieving modern and intelligent production. Experts have compared the past and present methods of producing Liuwei Dihuang Wan (a traditional Chinese medicine formula) as an example. In the past, TCM companies simply decocted the herbs together, then extracted and purified them. This method resulted in a lack of research and control over the content and variations of effective components across different batches. Now, by monitoring the production process and investing in intelligent pharmaceutical equipment, TCM companies can stabilize the effective components of their products within a controllable range, improving manufacturing quality and drug quality. However, due to the complexity of TCM components and mechanisms of action, it is more challenging for pharmaceutical equipment companies to assist pharmaceutical companies in achieving intelligent production. "Currently, in the field of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) manufacturing equipment, much of the equipment is still imported. Modular, digital, and intelligent pharmaceutical equipment suitable for the characteristics of TCM production needs to be developed and promoted more quickly," an expert said. "The intelligentization of TCM manufacturing requires modern technology, and it also needs intelligent technology to give TCM production 'smart wings.'"

Judging from the current level of intelligent equipment technology mastered by pharmaceutical equipment companies, the key to achieving true "intelligent manufacturing" and "intelligent factories" lies in the deep integration of next-generation information technology with industrial manufacturing processes. From the bottom up, pharmaceutical equipment companies need to improve the intelligence, automation, digitalization, and networking levels of their equipment, establishing the foundation for intelligent pharmaceutical equipment. From the top up, pharmaceutical equipment companies need to actively adopt next-generation information technologies such as big data, the industrial internet, and cloud computing, establishing data centers and support service platforms based on these technologies to achieve intelligent decision-making, optimized management, system development, and service, thereby improving the competitiveness of pharmaceutical companies.

Although my country's intelligent pharmaceutical equipment technology is not yet mature, most companies have already made efforts in this area and achieved certain results. Many pharmaceutical companies have also improved their competitiveness with the help of intelligent pharmaceutical equipment. In the future, pharmaceutical equipment companies will need to establish the correct concept of "intelligent manufacturing," study the compliance issues of various intelligent equipment and systems under the intelligent manufacturing model, and explore the path of intelligent manufacturing in the pharmaceutical equipment industry.
